WEEKLY NEWS FOR FEB. 12

Good evening folks!

Last week the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) presented three proposals to Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality council, including waste management changes and a commercial organic waste ban. These proposals seek to alleviate costs and capacity issues at the Sun Peaks Transfer Station and regional landfill.

β€œOver the past 20 years, we’ve seen more and larger commercial-type loads, trailers filled with garbage, using the site,” Vieira said. β€œThat causes traffic congestion, longer unloading times and increased costs.”

The TNRD delegation also presented a proposal for a brick-and-morter library in Sun Peaks.

β€œWe've known for quite a few years that people wanted more access and we have been trying to do that within our mobile library schedule,” TNRD’s Melissa Lowenberg, manager of community libraries and engagement said.

These are the first steps of those conversations, with more information to come.

Plus, we have a story from contributor Louise Hudson, who covered the TELUS Nancy Greene Alpine Classic, as well as a Conditions Report from Brad Harrison. Check those out below.

Finally, our thoughts are with the residents, families and loved ones of those impacted by the shooting in Tumbler Ridge. Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality shared a statement this morning stating the flags will be lowered.

There are a number of resources available for folks who need during this time. Youth can text 686868, call 1-800-668-6868 or message online to connect with a trained, volunteer crisis responder. Adults can text 741741 to connect with a trained, volunteer crisis responder. Visit KidsHelpPhone.ca/PeerToPeer for more information.
