WEEKLY NEWS FOR JULY 23

Good afternoon folks,

This week, the municipality held a gathering with local Indigenous leaders, the province and local stakeholders. The day featured a flag raising, a memorandum of understanding and discussion of the 2026 Official Community Plan, among other moments of collaboration. 

While I have not yet been able to obtain a copy of the memorandum signed between the province and local first nations I do have an article explaining what these documents are used for. 

I also share a bit more about why the 2026 Official Community Plan draft was discussed. The municipality will host an open house tonight for community feedback regarding the Official Community Plan from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sun Peaks Centre. Residents can review a copy of the draft on the municipality’s website, where comments and concerns can also be submitted.

The municipality will host a public engagement session and hearing prior to finalizing the Official Community Plan.

Local and regional tidbits to be aware of.

🌲 Wildfire fuel mitigation is underway around Sun Peaks, which may include sounds of tree felling and chipping. No prescribed burns are planned until the fall. 

📫 The Heffley Creek Post Office will be temporarily closed effective Aug. 6. PO Box services will be permanently discontinued the same day. Residents who use PO box services should visit the post office prior to Aug. 5 to receive a prorated refund for the remainder of the rental term. Mail forwarding forms must be also completed prior to Aug. 5.

🐻 There have been many reports of wildlife activity in and around Sun Peaks, including foxes and bears. One way to reduce interactions with wildlife is to keep pets on a leash, according to Sun Peaks Bear Aware.

“Off-leash dogs may chase or surprise a bear, then run back to their owner with the bear following. In bear country, keeping your dog leashed helps protect your pet, yourself and the bears that call Sun Peaks home,” the non-profit wrote on Facebook. Additional safeguards include securing garbage, pet food and other attractants and carrying bear spray. To learn more about how and when to deploy bear spray, click here.

Summer Stoke Series

🚴🏻  Join the Sun Peaks Bike Park Crew for a head-to-head pump track race. All abilities are welcome and helmets are mandatory. Registration is $15 and does not require a lift ticket. Spectators are encouraged to come watch!

Canadian National DH Championship

🚴🏻 The Dunbar Summer Series and Sun Peaks Resort are teaming up to host the 2026 Canadian National Downhill Mountain Bike Championships. Riders from across Canada and beyond will get together for three days of championships with spectators encouraged to come and volunteers needed. Click here to volunteer and here to register.

👩🏼‍🌾 Stroll through the Sun Peaks Farmers' Market from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 

⛪️ Sun Peaks Church will be holding a service every Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join at the Annex.

📚 The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library’s mobile library visits Sun Peaks School every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Whitecroft Village from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. 

Mondays

👐 From July 6 to Aug. 24 Quizzy Rascal Quiz Nights will be at Masa's starting at 8 p.m. $2 cash per person, with teams of up to six!

Tuesdays

💪🏽 Join Heffley Creek Hall for Golden Fitness classes, all ages and fitness levels welcome. Dancersize is at 11 a.m., followed by gentle weights at 12:30 p.m., Tai Chi walking at 1:30 p.m., chair pilates at 2 p.m. and chair yoga at 2:30 p.m.

Fridays

❤️ AA community addictions meetings run every Friday at Sun Peaks Secondary beside the Health Clinic, starting at 7:30 p.m.
