An agenda for this meeting is available on the SPMRM website, and you can view a recording of the meeting via the municipality's YouTube channel.
Here are the highlights of the meeting:
Sun Peaks charity bottle depot
The Rotary Club of Sun Peaks presented a report on its refundable drink-container depot, which also supports Adaptive Sports of Sun Peaks and the Sun Peaks Education Society. Since 2017, volunteers have sorted over three million containers, generating more than $60,000 annually for local community programs. The depot operates daily on municipal property and all proceeds, after expenses, are shared equally among the three organizations. Funds support a wide range of initiatives, from adaptive sports and school programs to food security projects, student awards and future playground development. Council thanked the presenters and expressed appreciation for Rotary’s commitment and positive community impact.
ELS Sun Peaks Service Review
Council received a progress update on the childcare service agreement with Early Learning Solutions (ELS), which included: a financial and operational review and a request for ELS to conduct a parent satisfaction survey. Council agreed to continue operational subsidies for another six months while monitoring progress.
CAST Membership
Administration requested authorization to apply for membership in CAST (Colorado Association of Ski Towns). The network includes mountain communities that share challenges and solutions related to tourism-focused municipalities. Council supported the application, noting that Sun Peaks can both benefit from and contribute to shared knowledge.
Dewatering centrifuge purchase
Council approved advancing the purchase of a new wastewater dewatering centrifuge for just over $306,000. Securing the unit now will allow installation in spring. The project will be funded through a combination of reserves and grants.
Temporary Use Permit
Council authorized proceeding with public notification on a temporary use permit for a suite at 224 Fairways Drive. While the parking layout initially listed only three spaces, staff acknowledged the property could accommodate five, pending a detailed parking plan before final approval.
Correspondence and Updates
Council received several information items, including provincial reports. One councillor noted that the Union of B.C. Municipalities is already engaged on issues related to the Professional Reliance Act and requested ongoing updates from staff.
