WEEKLY NEWS FOR JUNE 25

Good afternoon folks,

Last weekend, I attended the fourth annual Go Skate Day hosted by the Sun Peaks Skate Park Foundation. It was so fun to hop back on my board and shred around the Sun Peaks Centre Stage making friends of all ages with music, prizes and snacks all available for free!

Next, I attended the Sun Peaks Secondary School’s 2026 graduation. Eight students received their diploma, along with some scholarships from the resort and the community. We were lucky to have such a beautiful day full of sunshine for this convocation! Some of those speeches, especially the valedictorian speech, made me and the rest of the crowd shed a tear or two.

Finally, I spoke to Frank Gish and Bradley Munro, who were the winners of this year’s Mountain Man Award for their commitment to the community. Both individually surpassed 200 hours of volunteering in the past year. What an inspiration these men are for the Sun Peaks community!

SUN PEAKS SECONDARY ACADEMY CELEBRATES THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2026 

The 2026 graduation ceremony was held in the community village filled with families, speeches and scholarships.

The Mountain Man Award is presented for exceptional dedication to the community through countless hours of volunteering.

Local and regional tidbits you should be aware of.

💰Property taxes are due Thursday, July 2. If you have not received your Tax Notice, contact reception@sunpeaksmunicipality.ca  or phone 250-578-2020. For more information and ways to pay, visit the municipality’s tax guide. 

🚴🏻 All Morrisey Trails are open and ready to go from Cedar Twist to Calypso Groove. Click here for a map of the trails.

💦 Over the summer, the municipality will be flushing waterlines via fire hydrants. Residents may notice running water on the streets as this maintenance work takes place. 

“The process is part of a routine maintenance program necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system,” the municipality announced in a statement. 

⚖️ This is the final week to participate in the alternative approval process to allow the Thompson-Nicola Regional District to borrow funds for the proposed Kamloops Search and Rescue hall and training facility. District residents have until June 26 to provide feedback on whether the district should borrow up to $6.3 million for the facility, which will serve as the headquarters for search and rescue, as well as a regional trailing facility. For those in favour, no action is needed. Those opposed should submit an electoral response form by June 26 at 4 p.m. Learn more here.

🎸 The Infectuals are coming to Sun Peaks for free live music in the village on June 26 at 7 p.m. on the village stage. Click here to learn more.

🇨🇦 The Sun Peaks Resort is hosting a Canada Day Long Weekend celebration with live music, family entertainment including Bouncy castles, movie nights, face painting and a bike parade all for free from June 26 to July 1. For the schedule of events and locations, click here.

🏃‍♀️ This weekend marks the annual Run like a Girl - Top of the World Ultra with runners from all over coming up to Sun Peaks to raise money for the Mountain Rescue. Come support these trail runners on June 27 bright and early. Click here for more information.

Sundays

⛪️ Sun Peaks Church will be holding a service every Sunday evening at 5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join at the Annex.

📚 The Thompson-Nicola Regional Library’s mobile library visits Sun Peaks School every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Whitecroft Village from 2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. 

Tuesdays

💪🏽 Join Heffley Creek Hall for Golden Fitness classes, all ages and fitness levels welcome. Dancersize is at 11 a.m., followed by gentle weights at 12:30 p.m., Tai Chi walking at 1:30 p.m., chair pilates at 2 p.m. and chair yoga at 2:30 p.m.

Fridays

❤️ AA community addictions meetings run every Friday at Sun Peaks Secondary beside the Health Clinic, starting at 7:30 p.m. 

DOWN THE HILL

🪘 The Kamloopa Powwow 2026 is being held at the Kamloopa Powwow Arbour from June 26 to 28. Join for three days of celebrating Indigenous culture with drumming, dancing, food and shopping. Click here for more information. 

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 This weekend is the Kamloops highland games located at Albert McGowan Park. Celebrate Scottish culture on June 27 at 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for a full day of Scottish dancing. Click here for tickets.

🍁 The City of Kamloops, Kamloops Arts Council and Kamloops Multicultural Society is hosting Canada Day at Riverside Park on July 1. Starting at 7 a.m., this is a free event filled with activities, food, entertainment and art in the park. Click here for details.
